Hi, I have sucked my thumb for my whole life but stopped for a while in my teens. I started again when I was 20 (I'm 32 now) when I was pregnant with my daughter and have been doing it ever since. I do it while I watch tv, watch a movie, play with my dog or cat but not my horse, sometimes while driving and sometimes at odd moments during the day when I "catch" myself. I usually do it for a few hours or less, but definitely do it every day. I do not suck my thumb while falling asleep nor when I'm sleeping. sometimes if I'm home alone all day I'll do it for extended periods of time which make my mouth and teeth uncomfortable and make my thumb pruny and pale. At this point I conciously try to stop but the urge persists , I'll cover my thumb with my other fingers or just use willpower, this doesn't always work though and there are times that I will continue to suck my thumb until my teeth begin to feel loose!!!! how can I end this habit???? All of my friends and family know that I suck my thumb and I do not hide it from anyone including boyfriends. I found it very stressful trying to hide it from everyone because I did it for so many years. Ever since I was about 17. I have quit hiding it and it makes life much easier. There is initial shock when people discover you do it and a little bit of teasing but if you continue to ignore it and tell them that you don’t care what they say, they eventually learn to accept it and leave you alone.
I am very confident and full of self esteem, I have always been outgoing and charismatic and a definate individual. My parents raised me to be confident and independent.I have always been very popular and a people person. How do I first broach the subject to those who had known me, but not that part of me? I remember always wanting to stop and having the hardest time stopping tsing. My parents were very supportive and didn't make a big deal over it. Though they knew I wanted to stop. I do remember it being a big deal waking up with a dry thumb, meaning I hadn't sucked all night, just while going to sleep. It was a gradual taper if memory serves me. I didn't expect to take it up again at 29. I just remember the comfort that was mine, when I was young when I did. I have told my Mom in my mid 20's that I wish, sometimes I could start tsing again - just for the comfort I achieved. She agreed, she wishes she could but just doesn't get the same comfort from it. She has tried once in a while, as I have. She enjoyed tsing up to mid teens, and then gave up; don't know the whole story but... We have had talks about it. I just remembered the comfort and sometime last year I kept my thumb in my mouth until it got soft again. And started to feel comfortable again. When I was caught sucking my thumb when I was little people usually scolded me. But my one neighbor always used to ask me what flavor my thumb was when I sucked it, chocolate or vanilla. She was so cool, because she didn’t make me feel bad about sucking my thumb. She acted like nothing was wrong with it.
Hi everyone! I'm new here; I found it while looking up thumb sucking. I am seventeen and have been sucking my thumb for, well, my whole life. There was a time when I was ashamed of sucking my thumb. My family has always tried to get me to stop. Finally they gave up. Thumb sucking just comes naturally to me. I can't stop it, I can't help it. I guess I am lucky because my friends accept it. They never bat an eye when my thumb goes to my mouth, whether deliberate or not. In fact, two of them also sucked their thumbs when they were younger, but their parents (unfortunately) put a stop to it.

Shortly before my husband and I got married, we started living together. One morning I woke up to find him looking at me in total wonder. I said, "what?" His reply, "Did you know you suck your thumb?" I said something to the effect of "no shit" and he said that he thought it was sort of "cute." We'll be married 20 years in August, and he *still* thinks my thumbsucking is "cute". Just knowing that there are others like me out there is amazing to me.
I read one little blurb in a magazine many years ago about adult thumb suckers, but never saw anything else about it over the years. To find that there are so many of us out there lets me know I'm not as "immature" or "mental" as I always thought I was. I always figured sucking my thumb was relatively harmless and my older son and youngest daughter have been thumb suckers (the younger one still is).
I won't ever give up my thumb, I'll have it in my mouth till it has to be pried out of there.Wow, I never realized just in how much company I'm in! I'm 42 and been sucking my thumb my entire life. My family tried the usual things to get me to stop when I was younger (except for putting the nasty tasting stuff on my thumb) - bandaids, pulling my thumb out of my mouth, teasing, etc. I just kept on slurping in secret. Actually, as I got older, my thumbsucking presented less of a problem for me - I don't feel the need to suck my thumb during the day, mostly it's at night or right before I get up in the morning and I have to have a pillow or something to "scrunch" in my hand while I suck my thumb. Matter of fact, I'd say over the last 10 years or so, I've actually started sucking my thumb even less - I used to go to sleep with my thumb in my mouth, but now I can fall asleep without it quite easily, although sometimes I will slurp a little bit if I'm having an especially hard time getting to sleep.
My kids have seen me with my thumb in my mouth, but as far as I know it doesn't seem to bother them, they never said anything to me. My oldest son used to suck his thumb when he was small and had a large callus on his thumb, but I believe he stopped on his own some time during grade school. My six year old presently sucks her thumb and doesn't have much of a callus at all but she's a "nose hooker" where I'm a "scruncher"! I have a 16 and 11 year old, neither were thumb suckers as babies and they don't suck their thumbs now either.
I don't have much of a callus on my thumb, or if it's there at all, it's very small and not easily noticed.
